Vaccinations: what each one is for and why boosters matter

Two situations come up most often with vaccination: the puppy or kitten series left unfinished, and boosters forgotten in adulthood. Both lead to the same place — protection is weaker than assumed.

This article does not say which vaccine goes in which week. The schedule is set by the vet according to species, age, how the animal lives and where it lives; there is no single universal chart.

The young animal: a series, not one shot

Young animals are born with immunity from the mother. That immunity fades over time, but when it fades varies from animal to animal — and while it is still high it can mask the effect of a vaccine. That is why vaccinations for young animals are given as a series at set intervals, not as a single dose.

Stopping halfway through the series is the worst case: the animal looks vaccinated but the protection was never completed. For an animal with any outdoor contact, that difference matters.

Rabies: different from the rest

Rabies vaccination stands apart for two reasons. First, the disease passes to humans and takes a severe course. Second, in Türkiye rabies vaccination has a legal dimension; for owned animals it is not a matter of preference.

If you plan to travel abroad, the rabies record is also the foundation of the whole process. A rabies vaccination given before the microchip was implanted may not be accepted, because it cannot be tied to that specific animal.

If there is a bite

If an animal bites you or someone else, the chain of decisions moves out of veterinary hands and into human healthcare. In that case you need to go to a human health facility; the decision about rabies risk belongs to the physician. The animal being vaccinated does not remove that step — it is one piece of information in the assessment.

Keep the vaccination card

The vaccination card is one of the hardest documents to reconstruct once lost. It is needed in these three situations:

• Travelling abroad — with dates and batch details
• As a condition of entry at boarding kennels, hotels and some groomers
• When you change clinic; a new vet cannot set the schedule correctly without the history

Photographing the card and keeping it on your phone is a simple habit that pays off. If the original is lost, at least the dates survive.

The density of street animals and the mild climate raise the chance of contact for animals that go outside. For cats in flats with open balconies and dogs that roam freely, the schedule may not be built the same way as for an animal that lives entirely indoors. Describe honestly how your animal actually lives — if it goes outside, say so; it directly affects the schedule.
